How Often Should You Have Your Gas Stove, Insert, Log Set, Or Fireplace Inspected, Serviced & Cleaned?

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 211 says that “Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances” — and that goes for all fireplaces, stoves, and inserts, even gas!

Most gas fireplace and stove manufacturers also recommend having a qualified technician out to service your gas fireplace, stove, or insert annually. This ensures that during the off-season, your flue has not become blocked by birds, animals, nesting materials, or other debris; your flashing, cap, or other protective chimney components haven’t failed to keep water out; and that your wiring and controls are all still functioning as they should. It also allows us to refresh and replace the embers and clean the inside of your appliance so it continues to look good and run at optimal levels.

What Does A Gas Appliance Service & Cleaning Include?

Gas fireplace repair, cleaning, and service are at the heart of what we do, and we pride ourselves on providing quick, thorough, dependable work. A complete and thorough service of your gas appliance will include each of the following:

  • removal and cleaning of log units
  • inspection and testing of all electrical and wiring components
  • cleaning of the glass
  • removal of any soot buildup or debris within the unit
  • test of the blowers to check for optimal run levels
  • adjustment of flame height to prevent soot as much as possible
  • replacement of rock wool embers in the unit (if necessary & applicable)
  • test for carbon monoxide leakage
  • final test-fire run

We regularly service many gas appliances from many brands, including Heatilator, Heat and Glo (HeatnGlo), GTI, Montigo, Majestic, Kozi, Lopi, Avalon, Fireplace Xtrordinair, and many others. No matter the type, brand, or age of your gas appliance, we can make sure it gets the attention it needs to work as safely and efficiently as possible for you and your family.

Common Signs Your Appliance Is Overdue For Service

In addition to your annual inspection and service, you should have your gas appliance serviced anytime you notice changes in performance or experience other unpleasant issues. Here are a couple of the most common signs that your gas appliance is overdue:

Smoke Is Visibly Pouring Out Of My Gas Fireplace Or Stove

If smoke is pouring off of, out of, or from around your gas fireplace, insert, or stove, call us at 970-234-3330 right away, as this shouldn’t be happening, and can be indicative of much larger problems.

My Gas Stove/Fireplace Smells Bad & Gives Me A Headache

There are several reasons why this may be occurring, so, first things first, you should schedule an inspection of your fireplace, stove, or insert with a Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA)-certified chimney sweep.

It’s possible that your unit may actually be leaking gas, which could cause headaches, nausea, and other health issues. Carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless, tasteless, and invisible gas, is produced when your gas appliance is in use. When working properly, your appliance should vent this odorless, colorless, tasteless, and invisible byproduct out of your air supply, but a problem with the appliance or the attached venting could cause carbon monoxide to seep back into your home.

If you experience headaches, a metallic taste in your mouth, or you get lightheaded when your gas appliance is in use, please call us right away to schedule your gas fireplace inspection and repair.

Dust can be another common cause of smells with gas fireplaces, stoves, and inserts. As the unit sits, possibly over the summer or even over years, dust accumulates. When the appliance is fired up, the dust is “cooked off.” While this is normal with gas appliances that are used infrequently, some people may be more sensitive to it than others.
