Is It Time To Have Your Pellet Appliance Serviced? We Specialize In The Service & Repair Of Pellet Stoves & Inserts!

Pellet stoves and inserts have become increasingly popular with homeowners in our area, and for good reason! Pellet-fired appliances provide the warmth and glow of a real wood-burning fire, but because the pellets are made of compacted wood waste, they produce fewer emissions, provide a cleaner burn, and require less storage space than wood. For many homeowners, there’s just nothing better than a pellet stove or insert.

Pellet Stoves

But like any other type of hearth appliance, your pellet stove or insert has working parts that need to be cleaned, serviced, and sometimes repaired, and your appliance needs to be inspected and cleaned on a regular basis — especially before or after the burn season.

When was the last time you had your pellet appliance serviced? If it’s been a while, it’s time to call the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA)-certified team at The Chimney Doctor.

We have experience servicing and repairing all brands, makes, and models of pellet stoves and inserts, and we’re committed to providing expert, dependable, clean, and thorough service to our neighbors in Grand Junction and the neighboring communities. When we’re in your home inspecting, servicing, cleaning, or repairing your pellet stove or insert, we promise to provide relevant facts about your appliance and chimney system (within the scope of the level of inspection performed or authorized), so that you can make the right decisions regarding the comfort and safety of your family.

How Often Should You Have Your Pellet Stove Or Insert Inspected, Serviced & Cleaned?

Unlike teeth cleanings, with pellet appliances, there is no hard and fast rule about how frequently you’ll need to have your pellet stove cleaned — it depends on use. A good rule of thumb is to have your pellet stove or insert cleaned and serviced every year, or every 2-3 tons of pellets burned (there are roughly 40-50 bags of pellets per ton) —whichever comes first. But regardless of how much use your pellet stove or insert gets, per the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), inspections should be scheduled every year.

The NFPA Standard 211 says, “Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.”

By scheduling an inspection each and every year, you’ll know whether or not your pellet stove or insert is in need of cleaning or repairs.

What Does A Pellet Stove/Insert Service & Cleaning Include?https://chimney.doctor/

With each pellet stove/insert cleaning, we perform these tasks:

  • get into all the hard-to-reach areas to make sure no buildup or blockages are present
  • run specialized pellet brushes up into your flue to remove whatever soot is present
  • remove the side panels and clean out the motors and electronics on your stove or insert with forced air
  • oil your motors (if applicable)
  • test-fire your stove to assure that no repairs are needed (if repairs are needed, you will be informed at the time of service)

If you’ve scheduled a repair or cleaning as a stand-alone service, we still recommend having your stove fully serviced and tested to assure that it continues running as it should.

Is It True That Pellet Stoves Can’t Have Chimney Fires?

For years, many believed that pellet stoves and inserts couldn’t cause chimney fires, but that’s simply not true. Time has shown that pellet stove and insert flues do become dirty enough to cause — and sustain — chimney fires.

In 2014, we went out to inspect a fire here in Grand Junction that was the result of not having a pellet stove flue cleaned in over 13 years! The fire spread to the structure and caused a lot of damage, and it could have been prevented through annual inspections and regular cleanings.
