Whether you have a pre-manufactured fireplace, a masonry fireplace, a stove, or an insert, regular cleanings are vital to the safety, performance, and longevity of the appliance and the attached chimney or stovepipe. Have you had your chimney and fireplace or stove cleaned recently?

No matter what type of fuel your appliance burns, be it wood, pellet, or gas, cleanings are necessary, and The Chimney Doctor can help. We’re Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA)-certified chimney sweeps who specialize in hearth appliance and chimney cleaning, and we can make sure your system is clean and ready for another burn season.

But first things first: When should you have your chimney and fireplace or stove cleaned?

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 211 states that, “Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.”

The CSIA recommends that “open masonry fireplaces should be swept at 1/8 inch of sooty buildup, and sooner if there is any glaze present in the system. This is considered to be enough fuel buildup to cause a chimney fire capable of damaging the chimney or spreading to the home. Factory-built fireplaces should be swept when any appreciable buildup occurs. The logic is that the deposit is quite acidic and can shorten the life of the fireplace.”

In other words, there is no hard and fast rule that says you’ll need to have your chimney and fireplace, stove, or insert cleaned after every burn season.

So what’s the best way to determine when your chimney is due for a cleaning? Schedule an annual inspection with a CSIA-certified chimney sweep and have your stove, fireplace, or insert serviced before or after each and every burn season. During an inspection, we’ll look for soot and creosote buildup and let you know whether or not you’re overdue.

If it is time for a cleaning, you can count on The Chimney Doctor to do the job right.
