The crown is the cement slab that the flue sticks up out of at the top of the chimney. It’s critical that the crown be in good condition so it can keep water out of the chimney system, but unfortunately, not every crown is up to par.

Without a drip edge, your crown will also dump water down onto the masonry of the chimney and the flashing below, causing leaks and water damage in these areas.
