Crown Repairs & Rebuilds Are Fast & Effective With The Chimney Doctor

Aside from the flashing, the chimney cap, and the masonry stack of the chimney, what other area is particularly vulnerable to chimney leaks and water damage? The chimney crown.

The crown is the cement slab that the flue sticks up out of at the top of the chimney. It’s critical that the crown be in good condition so it can keep water out of the chimney system, but unfortunately, not every crown is up to par.

Your crown may fail to keep water out of your chimney as a result of one or more of these factors:

  • Water damage — Water is capable of totally destroying just about every area of the chimney if the chimney isn’t safeguarded, and the crown’s no exception. A water-damaged crown may be crumbling, cracking, and otherwise deteriorating, and allowing water into the chimney.
  • Bad construction — Just like anything, the design and construction of your crown largely determines how effective and long-lasting it will be. A long-lasting crown will be made of cement, not simple mortar. And if your crown wasn’t constructed of the right thickness and with slightly sloped sides, water will settle on top of the crown and rapidly wear it down. Without a drip edge, your crown will also dump water down onto the masonry of the chimney and the flashing below, causing leaks and water damage in these areas.

When was the last time you had your chimney crown inspected and repaired? If it’s been more than a year, it’s time to give The Chimney Doctor a call. We’ll carefully evaluate your chimney crown, identify any cracks, deterioration, or design flaws, and make recommendations for repairs or rebuild.

Decades Of Leak Protection Are Possible With CrownSaver & CrownCoat

Our team uses brushable and trowelable sealants to seal cracks and provide crowns in Grand Junction and the surrounding communities with years of leak protection. Here’s a little bit about the crown repair and waterproofing products we use and why they’re the best waterproofing products out there:

  • CrownSaver — CrownSaver is a strong, cement-based waterproofing product that’s troweled onto the crown to provide water protection for 10 years — guaranteed. When applied professionally, results are clean, inconspicuous, and attractive.
  • CrownCoat — CrownCoat is a brushable sealant that can seal cracks, prevent cracks from growing, and keep water out for 15 years — guaranteed. CrownCoat is also permanently flexible, which means it moves with the cement crown and allows for flue expansion, which can help prevent future cracks.

If you need a whole new crown poured, we can take care of that as well. As Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA)-certified chimney professionals, we know what it takes to build a high-quality, attractive, and long-lasting crown — one that will keep water out for years.
