Your pre-season chimney sweep is an important staple for the safety of your home and efficiency of your chimney system. Most homeowners have their chimney swept annually, typically before the main burning season starts. However, there are certain situations when an additional sweeping may be in order.
What do you do when it seems your chimney system seems to be in need of a sweep…and the winter burning season is already in full swing? Maybe the busyness of life got to you and – oops – you suddenly realize you’ve overlooked your annual inspection and sweeping. Or perhaps a strange odor or smoke backup has you concerned. Is a mid-winter sweep possible?
The General Rule: Book Chimney Sweeps Annually
If you have a chimney of any sort in your home, it needs to be inspected annually – whether you use it a little or a lot – to ensure safer and more efficient functionality and structural integrity. Generally, an annual sweeping will also suffice to keep creosote, soot, and debris at bay. With an annual inspection and sweeping before the burning season starts, you can probably rest assured that your chimney is ready for use and will work well all season long.
When Might I Need a Mid-Season Chimney Sweep?
If there are indicators that your chimney needs attention, it would be irresponsible not to pay attention to those signs simply because you checked off the “sweeping” box earlier in the year.
One of these indicators is inhibited ventilation. Smoke backing up into your living space? Weak or faltering flames? The problem could be in your flue. If your chimney is obstructed by debris or built-up creosote, it won’t be able to do its job. Airflow may be restricted, making it harder for smoke and other combustion by-products to rise and be vented safely outside. Poor airflow to your firebox can also affect your ability to get a strong blaze going.
Similarly, if you note excess soot showing up around the fireplace, poor ventilation may be a culprit that needs to be addressed.
Any strong, unpleasant odor in your house will get your interest piqued! Smells from the chimney can result from trapped moisture, an animal that’s found your way into the chimney, or decomposing creosote.
Are any of these desirable? No. Don’t just cover up strange smells – the source needs to be identified and addressed, for the sake of your chimney’s health and the safety of your household.
A recent storm with heavy precipitation or high winds may also cause some chimney issues. Your chimney cap, being perched on top of your chimney, may be vulnerable to these conditions, and if your chimney cap is compromised, so is your first line of defense against rain, sleet, snow, and animals. If you’ve noticed any damage or changes in how your fireplace burns post-storm, reach out.
Finally, if you’ve substantially increased your fireplace use, it may be worth calling to ask whether an extra sweeping is in order this year. The more you use your fireplace, the quicker soot and creosote can build up. Creosote is tarry and stubborn, and can become more problematic as it builds up, so heavy use can necessitate more frequent sweeping.
Can Chimney Sweeps Be Done in Cold Weather?
Winter can get in the way of a number of activities – does it affect the sweeping process?
Good news here. Cold weather typically doesn’t prevent a chimney sweep from being completed – and completed effectively. Chimney sweep technicians are trained to work in a variety of conditions, and modern equipment can handle sweeping and most maintenance jobs in many types of weather.
That’s not to say that weather won’t affect some repairs – but that’s where industry expertise comes in. Our well-trained and knowledgeable sweeps know how to work responsively to challenges that may arise during our work days. We work hard – and carefully – so you can rest at ease.
If you haven’t yet booked a sweeping for the year, it isn’t too late. Get one on the schedule, and take the opportunity to book next year’s as well!
Are Winter Chimney Repairs Possible?
Long story short, yes. It’s natural to wonder whether it’s possible to get chimney repairs done in winter. Some repairs – such as waterproofing or exterior masonry work – may be best scheduled for later in the year, but other maintenance and repairs, such as relining or eliminating blockages, can be handled during the winter months.
If you’re facing chimney issues, especially significant damages, it’s always going to be best to address them as soon as possible. Failing to do so can increase risks and costs. And, of course, you probably want to be able to use your fireplace safely this time of year! Take the first step by making an appointment, and we’ll help you identify and execute the best possible solution to your chimney woes.
What Should I Do Between Sweeps?
A full chimney sweeping is usually only necessary once a year, but good burning practices are a year-round occasion. To keep your system as clean, clear, and healthy as possible between sweepings, replace any components that are corroded promptly. Burn only well-seasoned firewood, and take notice of changes in your fireplace or chimney that could mean they need professional attention.
